Abstract

This chapter re-considers the relationship between the early forms of association football and rugby football in the mid-nineteenth century and argues that the traditional dichotomy between the two sports is erroneous. Instead, the chapter posits that both codes shared a common history that only definitely began to bifurcate in the 1870s when cup competitions, in particular the FA Cup, began to be established.
