Abstract
Description
This is a large-scale collaborative piece with dancers from the company Karas, guest performers and live animals, and music performed by Sand on a huge green pastoral stage. Sand are a group that explore working with electronics and instrumental approaches. The group were formed in 1996 and have had three albums released by Soul Jazz Records.
The research imperative for Green/Raj Packet II was based around the collaborative nature of the work and bringing artists, dancers and musicians together from different backgrounds. The piece has no real narrative and is constructed from individual scenes, cameos, all within the green landscape. A variety of different musical material is used, ranging from improvised textures, music only, to intricate composed passages for the style of dancing pioneered by Teshigawara known as ‘post-butoh’ (an awareness for the physicality in dance, including movements from everyday motion and mimes to acrobatics). Green/Raj Packet II was devised by Saburu Teshigawara, dancers and four musicians from Sand sharing ideas collectively during rehearsals.
Role: for the collaboration with Karas and Saburu Teshigawara, the exploration of using real-time granular pulses to provide rhythmic material for dance within a minimal musical framework to convey the huge green landscape/stage. The more physical aspect of post-butoh is expressed musically by extreme noise music within the rock idiom performed collectively by Sand.
The piece has received the Dance Critic Award, and the Nimura Dance Award. Green/Raj Packet II has been performed at the National Theatre, Japan, 2002; Festival Montpellier Danse 2003; Civitanovadanza Festival, Italy, 2004; and Melbourne International Art Festival, 2005.
A DVD containing extracts from the performance is included.
