Abstract

Fermynwoods Contemporary Art run a programme of alternative education specifically for young people who are permanently excluded from school, dual registered and for school age mothers.

The programme invites artists to work with the young people to engage in art works and pedagogical activities.

Description

Many of the young people in this programme struggle to concentrate and focus - this drawing workshop by Louise Clarke deliberately offered a space for slow, detailed observation. Using nature specifically fresh fish, participants were supported in challenging their emotions and energy. Artists are often regarded as outsiders which affords them a different approach and way of communicating from perhaps other adults in authority which the young adults generally encounter. This work is direct and a tangible outcome of an engaged art practice.
