Abstract
This paper explores the often neglected notion of mutuality in the context of mental health care. The idea that some kind of mutual exchange is beneficial in nurse-client relationships has a long history. It dates back at least to the work of Hildegard Peplau (1952), it has underlain a great many attempts to investigate nursing as a relational process, and it has informed many attempts to render care more compassionate and egalitarian.
