THE CUBE: AN IMMERSIVE BLOOD PATTERN ANALYSIS EXPERIENCE

Abstract
The BSc (Hons) Forensic Science degree course at De Montfort University (DMU) is accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (CSFS). Additionally, DMU is extremely proud of its TEF (Teaching Excellence Framework) Gold rating, as this evidences a blended pedagogic approach involving autonomous initiative with collaborative co-creation. Within this presentation, we will present a unique and novel learning experience via a specialist immersive facility, namely ‘The Cube’.
Within ‘The Cube’, a 360° panoramic film with surround sound is projected from the ceiling on to four panelled wall screens. Thus enabling undergraduate students to enter a real world scenario, in a controlled environment. Recently, a video recording from the campus crime scene house bathroom has demonstrated this innovative contextualisation.
Volunteers (in small groups) were instructed to observe, analyse and interpret the blood patterns presented in the footage, which depicts the aftermath of a potential violent incident. Prior to entering, the volunteers independently visited the ‘crime’ location in a role as a Crime Scene Investigator to document and photograph blood stains in-situ. Subsequently, the perspective of the Forensic Biologist within the laboratory is undertaken to examine clothing from the persons involved. Finally, the group considers the propositions of the defence and prosecution in relation to the evidential findings.
This activity utilises the combination of physical facilities, virtual resources and the casework expertise of practitioner based academics to enhance and transform the educational experience. This has resulted in increased confidence of DMU undergraduates with regards to Blood Pattern Analysis (BPA), via peer feedback, reflection and critical evaluation.
Ultimately, this tripartite model has culminated in a dual research informed teaching and student-led research; a paradigm shift in forensic science education. Therefore, these findings will be of paramount importance for academics and practitioners delivering BPA training.
