Abstract

Description

This paper introduces a new approach to modelling the mechanical behaviour of knitted structures based on the finite-element method analysis of the fabric structure presented as a 2D mesh of unit cells. Usually fabric is considered as a continuous media and then the results are adjusted using correction factors obtained from the experiments. The proposed approach enables for the first time the fabric mechanics to be predicted from the description of the fabric structure and basic mechanical properties of the constituting threads. The results of this investigation will have a significant impact on the advances of structural mechanics of textiles.
