Abstract

This chapter provides a qualitative analysis of news coverage of peace, in a context of changing relations between historical enemies in an internationally relevant conflict. It focuses on the coverage of the first six months of the Israeli–Palestinian Oslo peace process by the New York Times. By means of a media content analysis, the chapter shows how this important newspaper covered developments during the first months of the political negotiations on its front page, and how it framed the meaning of peace. These results are then discussed through a critical analysis of the discourses of peace available at the time.
