An output from an EPSRC funded project (GR/K67151/01, £231,279) involving collaboration of 3 universities and 6 industrial partners, including Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Airbus and Short Brothers. A novel tooling method based on laser cut metal sheets, brazed to form a laminated structure, was developed and tested. The project was awarded Alpha 4 for Science and Technology merit and excellent for management and use of resources in the final report assessment. Research to further develop and extend the process for the manufacture of high pressure die casting tools was subsequently secured from EPSRC – IMI RADICAL (GR/M75068).en
