This paper establishes a theoretical basis for a new method of measuring the single flax fibre fineness using LaserScan and OFDA instruments which are now the standard testers for measuring fibre fineness. Fibre fineness is one of the most important characteristics which define fibre quality; it is universally used for the selection of fibres for the production of high quality textiles. The proposed method will be used in the textile industry for the characterisation of quality of bast fibres and in agronomic practice for cultivation and selection of flax varieties with specified fibre characteristicsen
