Abstract

Courseware is described which provides a bridge between the lecture room and laboratory in the field of applied microbiology. The program, developed using Authorware Professional, simulates the practical problems and decisions that need to be addressed in planning, setting up and carrying out research and development experiments. It contains three lessons. The Isolation of Microorganisms, Monitoring Growth in Batch Culture; Growth in Continuous Culture. The program has a highly structured linear development style and is expected to occupy the user for at least six to eight hours. Notable features of the program include the use of animation and many different response types. Pull-down menus give access to a 'library' and indicate the users location within each lesson.
