Abstract

Description

Pharmaceutical cleanrooms must meet strict air cleanliness requirements, with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems creating substantial energy demand. Strict compliance requirements typically result in a conservative control approach with high fixed air change rates. Dynamic demand-based HVAC control is a promising energy saving alternative. However, for the industry to fully embrace this carbon reduction opportunity, a better understanding of ventilation patterns and control approaches is needed. A CFD study of a cleanroom was conducted, using measured boundary conditions and validation through a temperature grid. The evaluation of air change effectiveness, velocity vectors and mean age of air confirms that acceptable ventilation performance can be achieved at low air change rates, giving further confidence that substantial energy savings can be achieved without compromising compliance.
