Abstract

This conference hosted by the ICSHC at DMU celebrated the long history of the Centre's work with the Oxford DNB since the newly configured dictionary was relaunched in 1993. Looking forward past the Olympic release in 2012, this relationship will extend to a motoring release in 2013, including some motor sports entries. DNB Research Editor, Mark Curthoys recorded that members of the Centre had so far contributed over 150 entries to the 59,000 existing biographies. Adrian Smith of Southampton, co conveyor of an AHRC network on biography, reminded us of the sporting interests of key historical figures in the dictionary. Jean Williams' paper on Gladys Carson discussed problems of method and approach in doing a biography of a working class swimmer, who won a bronze medal in 1924 but who left no extensive personal papers of her own.
