Abstract

Description

This chapter is situated within the debate about community-based accommodation for people with learning difficulties. Ongoing policy in this area is argued to be concerned with idealised views about ‘care in the community’, normalisation and quality of life. The chapter itself contributes to the growing body of theory and research which challenges such fixed beliefs. It proposes a model for adapting the work of Foucault to show how people talk about life in care accommodation, and uncovers various ways that people in care settings struggle with power relationships, and the ways in which their needs are externally defined.
