Abstract

This paper describes current results and findings from an investigation whose principal aim is to improve the cost model development process, i.e. the speed and effectiveness with which cost models are developed and applied. Academic experts in the fields of cost modelling and soft computing have been brought together with major UK aerospace companies, their SMEs suppliers, and an international developer and vendor of costing software. Workshops and structured interviews has been conducted to identify current cost models development tools and techniques, used both in and outside the aerospace industry, and to determine the conditions under which their represent ‘best practice’. This work will lead to the development of an expert advisor to improve the capability of the UK aerospace industry in the key areas of product and process costing. A comprehensive toolkit of data identification, data collection, data analysis and decision making tools are being developed for this advisor.
