Abstract

This exhibition takes the German word for tender and delicate, zart, as its origin, exploring and interrogating through the selection and curation of the exhibition, artists whose practice engages in detail, the overlooked or inconspicuous. The works included in (Z)Art can also be viewed as a counter movement to contemporary tendencies; delicateness and tender putting up gentle resistance to the domination of making exhibitions bombastic and spectacular.

Against this backdrop, the two sculptures produced for (Z)Art occupy territory between logical design and the paradoxical. The transparent and delicate materiality of their construction almost renders them invisible and immaterial as sculptures. The situating of these works directly in front of two gallery windows heightens the sense that the works operate as devices through which to continue the viewing of space. However, despite their optical transparency and slightness, these works, through their formal construction, segment and partition space within the gallery, trapping and confronting potential viewers and creating space for new encounters and exchange.
