Abstract

Description

For Microform Academic Publishers to film all the Orwell correspondence, drafts, and manuscripts in over a score of UK libraries and archives it was essential they knew what to look for and where. Davison provided this information from his 20-volume edition, The Complete Works of George Orwell (1998). The BBC had microfilmed its holdings so these were not duplicated. In addition to items printed in the edition, microfilming also made possible the inclusion in full of many letters to Orwell only summarised in the edition. One letter omitted from the edition was found at Reading and this, with four letters recently discovered by Ralph Desmarais in the C.D. Darlington Papers at Bodley, were included in his supplementary volume, The Lost Orwell, 2007. A very few letters in private collections were not released by their owners. In addition it was possible to negotiate with Brown University, Rhode Island, for the inclusion of the draft of Nineteen Eighty-Four.
