The first part of this chapter discusses the relationship between Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg in terms of the many parallels in their early careers. The second part examines their work in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when they became friends and started talking about the project that was to become A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). Finally, I survey the development of the A.I. project and of the respective careers of the two filmmakers from the mid‐1980s to the late 1990s.en
