Abstract

The evolution of gerontology and its position and status as a discipline is explored and discussed. The end point (as noted in the text) as possibly being within 'cultural gerontology' - see as having 'derived from a further widening and rethinking' in relation to critical gerontology. Narrow perspectives relating to what is described as the 'dependence–independence axis' are argued as requiring to be 'set aside'.
