dc.descriptionAn exhibition of four discrete bodies of work presenting works made in the UK and shown in a Japanese cultural setting. The work was selected by the gallery to show forms of contemporary painting, installation and sculpture. In this, the exhibition was significant in enhancing practice in the field of fine art and in raising questions about cultural perspectives created, and in contributing to a wider cultural understanding. The exhibition was sponsored by the University of Seian, Kyoto. Central to the significance and originality in the research shown by Kirkwood as part of the exhibition, in enhancing the practice in the field and extending a new form of expression, is the appreciation developed by the work that our experience of colour is physical and not merely optical. The critical and contextual field is delineated by drawing on the philosophical methodology of Phenomenology and in particular Merleau-Ponty’s articulation of the role of the body in perception The rigour of the research derives from the methodology employed in the systematic exploration of colour, involving studies and tests.
