Exploring Corporate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Disclosure in a Politically Unstable Environment: Evidence from the Libyan Oil Industry
Purpose: This paper provides a novel mapping method to sustainable development goals (SDG) disclosure based on empirical web-data analysis of a context has recently undergone revolutionary changes in its political regime, namely Libya. Furthermore, we explore some insights into the expected political influence on the explored trends in, levels and patterns of, SDG disclosures in the Libyan oil industry. Design/methodology/approach: We use a deductive content analysis approach to analyse web-based SDG information of around 7,000 web pages of 13 of the major oil companies in Libya that resulted in collecting 3,350 individual data records from 2008 to 2015. Findings: The peak of SDG disclosure was recorded from 2010 until uprisings unfolded in 2011, and then the figures only recovered in 2015. In addition, the environmental disclosure is consistently relegated in the Libyan context, mostly in favour of the economic domain. Arguably, the case of political uncertainty may have widened the longitudinal gap between sustainability practices and SDGs disclosure in Libya. Political implications: Given the fact that the Libyan sustainability context has a poor structural congruity with the global inter-conjunction footprints between the seventeen SDGs, our findings emphasise a crucial need for more concerted efforts by regulatory and professional bodies to integrate political, social and economic policies to enhance sustainability within Libya. Social implication: Improving SDG disclosure in Libya would seem to require more regulative and political pressure. Originality/value: Our study distinctively contributes to the literature by introducing an applicable method to analyse the inclusiveness of SDG disclosure, SDG indices and the gap of SDG practice-disclosure.
