Irene Steer (1889–1977), swimmer, and Olympic title holder
Abstract
The Welsh champion Irene Steer (1889–1977), swimmer, was born at 290 Bute Street, St Mary, Cardiff, on 10 August 1889, the daughter of George Steer, master draper, and his wife, Annie Charlotte, née Lewis. On 15 July 1912 Steer was a member of the Great Britain gold-medal winning team in the ladies 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay at the Stockholm Olympic Games , whose other members were Isabella [Bella, Belle] Moore, Annie Speirs and Jennie Fletcher. She married, on 28 July 1915, William Nicholson, dentist, son of Thomas Nicholson, schoolmaster; they had three daughters and a son. She died at 101 Station Road, Llanishen, Cardiff, on 18 April 1977.
