Item Open Access The consequences of a refund in threshold public good games(Elsevier, 2015-06-11) Cartwright, Edward; Stepanova, A.We revisit the question of whether a refund increases efficiency in threshold public good games. New experimental evidence is presented on the effect of endowment size. We demonstrate that a refund increases efficiency if and only if the endowment is small relative to the threshold. We also propose a novel way to analyze the effect of a refund. Specifically, we argue that a refund increases efficiency only if significantly many groups converge towards zero contributions in the absence of a refund.Item Open Access Efficiency in a forced contribution threshold public good game'(Springer, 2017-03-04) Cartwright, Edward; Stepanova, A.We contrast and compare three ways of predicting efficiency in a forced contribution threshold public good game. The three alternatives are based on ordinal potential, quantal response and impulse balance theory. We report an experiment designed to test the respective predictions and find that impulse balance gives the best predictions. A simple expression detailing when enforced contributions result in high or low efficiency is provided.Item Open Access Impulse balance and framing effects in threshold public good games(Wiley, 2019-01-25) Cartwright, Edward; Stepanova, A.; xue, LianIn this paper, we revisit the evidence for framing effects in threshold public good games. Our particular focus is on why the probability of providing the public good appears to be higher in positive, give frames compared with negative, take frames. We show that the impulse balance theory can explain this effect. We also report a new experiment designed to test the predictions of the impulse balance theory. The results of the experiment fit well, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, with our predictions.
