Item Open Access Institutional shareholder activism in Nigeria(Emerald, 2016) Uche, C.; Adegbite, E.; Jones, M.Abstract Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to investigate institutional shareholder activism in Nigeria. It addresses the paucity of empirical research on institutional shareholder activism in sub-Saharan Africa. Design/Methodology-This study employs agency theory to understand the institutional shareholder approach to shareholder activism in Nigeria. The data is collected through qualitative interviews with expert representatives from financial institutions. Findings-The findings indicate evidence of low-level shareholder activism in Nigeria. The study provides empirical insight into the reasons why institutional shareholders might adopt an active or passive approach to shareholder activism. The findings suggest the pension structure involving two types of pension institutions affects the ability to engage in shareholder activism. Research implications-The research study advances our understanding of the status-quo of institutional shareholder activism in an African context such as Nigeria. Practical implications- The paper makes a practical contribution by highlighting that regulators need to consider how the financial market conditions and characteristics affect effective promotion of better governance practices and performance through shareholder activism. Originality-This study draws attention to the implication for shareholder activism of complexities associated with an institutional arrangement where two types of financial institutions are expected to operate and manage the private pension funds in a country.Item Open Access Institutional shareholder activism in Nigeria: An accountability perspective(Elsevier, 2016-03-30) Uche, C.; Adegbite, E.; Jones, M.Research has identified institutional shareholders and shareholders’ associations as separate groups that are able to interact and promote accountability through shareholder activism. This study employs a qualitative methodology to critically evaluate how institutional shareholders perceive the participation of shareholders’ associations in shareholder activism. Exploring the Nigerian context, we examine three features of accountability that are vital in shareholder activism; dialectical activity, independence and agenda. We contribute to the accountability literature by showing how these three features shape institutional shareholders’ perception of shareholders’ associations as shareholder activists. Our findings show distinct differences between the views of representatives from active and passive institutional shareholders.Item Embargo An old dog and new tricks: Genetic analysis of a Tudor dog recovered from the Mary Rose wreck(Forensic Science International, 2014-10-14) Zouganelis, G. D.; Ogden, R.; Nahar, N.; Runfola, V.; Bonab, Maziar Ashrafian; Ardalan, A.; Radford, Dennis; Barnett, R.; Larson, G.; Hildred, A.; Jones, M.; Scarlett, G.The Tudor warship the Mary Rose sank in the Solent waters between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight on the 19th of July 1545, whilst engaging a French invasion fleet. The ship was rediscovered in 1971 and between 1979 and 1982 the entire contents of the ship were excavated resulting in the recovery of over 25,000 objects, including the skeleton of a small to medium sized dog referred to as the Mary Rose Dog (MRD). Here we report the extraction and analysis of both mitochondrial and genomic DNA from a tooth of this animal. Our results show that the MRD was a young male of a terrier type most closely related to modern Jack Russell Terriers with a light to dark brown coat colour. Interestingly, given the antiquity of the sample, the dog was heterozygotic for the SLC2A9 gene variant that leads to hyperuricosuria when found in modern homozygotic animals. These findings help shed light on a notable historical artefact from an important period in the development of modern dog breeds.Item Metadata only Rainbows Children's Hospice Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show(2012) Harwood, Tracy; Jones, M.Item Metadata only Shedding light on retail environments(ACM, 2013) Harwood, Tracy; Jones, M.; Carreras, A.
