Paying for the welfare state and taxation in the UK

This chapter provides an overview of the UK tax system for social policy students. It sets out the main reasons why welfare state services and income support are paid for collectively through taxation and describes the ways in which tax revenues are spent. The chapter examines some of the redistributive consequences of taxation in the UK and the ways in which taxation functions as an instrument of social policy.
