Item Open Access Building Guidelines for UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ Apps(International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA), 2020-11) Preis Dutra, JoatanTechnological improvements and access provide a fertile scenario for the creation and development of mobile applications. This scenario of intense production of new software for mobile devices results in a myriad of apps providing information about almost all the cultural segments, including those dedicated to UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS). However, not all of the apps have the same efficiency. In order to have a successful app, its development must consider usability aspects aligned with reliable content. Despite the guidelines for mobile usability being broadly available, they are generic, and none of them concentrates specifically in cultural heritage. This article aims to fulfil this literature gap and discusses how to develop specific guidelines for a better WHS experience. It uses an empirical approach applied to an open-air WHS city: Weimar and its Bauhaus and Classical Weimar sites. To build the guidelines, this research compared literature-based guidelines to industry-based ones, extracted from a vast compendium of available apps dedicated to WHS. The instructions compiled from both sources have been comparatively tested by using two built prototypes from the distinctive guidelines.Item Open Access Cultural hARitage: Augmented Reality applied on Cultural Heritage(Eurographics Association, 2014-12-08) Ebel, Ivana; Preis Dutra, JoatanCultural heritage contents are commonly offered by touristic mobile applications, but it is possible to explore deeper the subject and add AR elements to create an immersive approach. The adaptation of an art-oriented tool reveals some of the possibilities to display cultural heritage content in real case scenario without any large technical experience. It also presents the difficulties of dealing with historical content in a context-aware experience. The developed solutions from the cultural hARitage project, in two practical situations in distinct scenarios (Belgium and Greece), presents something more pragmatic, where it is empirically possible to validate some of the developed propositions and the opportunity to analyze the combination of AR and Cultural Heritage content.Item Embargo Design Principles for Co-Creating Inclusive and Digitally Mediated Public Spaces(Edições Universitárias Lusófona, 2017-01-13) Bagni, Francesco; Bojic, Iva; Duarte, Tiago; Preis Dutra, Joatan; Gaule, Scott; van Heerden, Adam; Karan, Isidora; Kikidou, Maria; Panagiotidi, Athanasia; Psaltoglou, ArtemisNew media technologies present spatial designers with a host of new tools, both for broadening civic engagement in the design process itself, and for inserting digital devices into public spaces, expanding on the diversity of groups that these spaces can cater for, and the diversity of experiences on offer. Moreover, such technologies offer new tools for generating co-created and shared value, and consequently an increased sense of ownership of these spaces by the public - a (re)valuing of the commons. Digital devices mediate many of our daily social interactions as well as the way we interact with and navigate our cities. This chapter presents the outcomes of a four-day training school programme where the primary focus was to develop a set of key principles that would guide public space designers in the design of inclusive and co-created public spaces. The design principles produced to inform the general structure of this report, giving rise to six broad themes of analysis: participation, quality, diversity, accessibility, flexibility, and hackability. Through the work of Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp is possible to check the concept of immaterial, the basis of the mediart.Item Open Access HCI/GUI Design Applied for Adaptable Context-Aware Mobile Game(University of the Arts Bremen, 2012-02-12) Preis Dutra, JoatanThis paper is about the design aspects applied to the StreetDroids Project, a context-aware mobile game developed for the Android Platform. It was the result of a one year project (2009/2010) combined between the applied science universities: Hochschule Bremen and Hochshcule Bremerhaven; immersed in the Digital Media Master Program1, in Bremen, Germany. The StreetDroids is an open mobile game where the users/players can contribute to its expansion by an available web-editor, being able also to apply the created missions on different games scenarios, taking place in the real environment, following the concept of pervasive gaming or real-world mission games. These were initially designed during the Venetian period on the island and later on, finished during the British Colonial period on Cyprus. Today the public space of the Moat and the Bastions are underused by citizens and visitors of the city. Most of the citizens of Nicosia nearly forgot the moat space due to the low public access and non-existence of social activities. Thus, lead to the leftover of the ‘bastions-moat-new city boundaries’ space as void. The INTA MOAT project proposes a platform to facilitate the use of the public space within the moat area at the old city’s Venetian walls, enabling a diverse set of activities and reconnection with this historical site.
